Mr. Mahaffey graduated from the University of Washington in 1996. From 1997-2001, he taught band in the Issaquah School District at Issaquah High School and Issaquah Middle School. In addition to teaching band, Mr. Mahaffey plays the trumpet in several local professional and amateur ensembles and conducts the Cascade Youth Symphony's Junior Symphony Orchestra.
